Hot Melt Adhesive is a major application of petroleum Eva Resin, in fact, there are many applications around us. Many of the books we read are EVA-based Hot Melt adhesives.

At present, most of the hot melt Binding Agent books in China are EVA-based hot melt adhesives, and their viscosifying resins are mainly petroleum resins, rosin and so on. There are also some high-end books that use polyurethane (PUR).

As a tackifier resin, petroleum resin is a good choice in EVA book binding adhesives, which can meet the performance requirements of EVA book binding adhesives. Requirements for hot melt adhesive are:

01 Suitable melting viscosity

The use temperature of book binding glue is generally controlled between 160-200℃, and the melting viscosity is too high when sizing, which will reduce the fluidity of the glue solution, resulting in poor paper bonding; The melt viscosity is too low, the fluidity of the glue increases, resulting in insufficient amount of glue on the back of the book, and the strength decreases. Generally, the viscosity index is more suitable at 4000 ~ 5000mPa·s at 170℃.

02 High tensile strength, fracture strength and hardness

Hot melt adhesive must have enough toughness and hardness to ensure that the product is not easy to be torn, torn and deformed after gluing, keep the back firm, and usually control the elongation and tensile strength of the matrix EVA to meet certain requirements.

03 Correct cure time

Two times parameters are involved in the use of hot melt adhesive: one is the bonding time of hot melt adhesive; One is the curing time of the hot melt adhesive. The bonding time refers to the time when the hot melt adhesive is painted on the back of the book and runs to the cover. This time is generally between 5 and 11s. If it is more than or insufficient, it will cause weak bonding, uneven back and high spine. Curing time refers to the glue is painted on the back of the book until the cooling curing can be cut this period of time, the curing time of hot melt adhesive is generally 2 ~ 3min, the curing speed is too slow, the back will be deformed in the transmission, and the knife is easy to stick when cutting.

Good chemical stability is also a very important indicator, if the thermal stability and oxidation resistance of hot melt adhesive is poor, the adhesive will age, carbonize, discolor metamorphism, and even reduce the bond strength. In addition to this, also consider the color, smell, etc.
